xo, comp card.
BROOKLYN, NY-2022
comp cards are an instrumental tool that models use as a way of presenting themselves through photos. despite the countless hours spent to pick the perfect set of images, that card stock piece of paper gets deposed yet holds weight in shifting esteem, worth, and longevity. the various thoughts of, what does he or she have that i don’t or when will it be my turn? working in casting at a black owned agency allowed me to create spaces for my people in an industry where the typical size 00 and european features are the “standard”. although, during the process, we do categorize models: yes’, no’s, and maybe’s based on energy, look, and height - i always felt a sense of uncomfortability in the midst of paving the way, though. of course designers & companies have their preferences that adhere to their aesthetic but it’s all subjective — how can one deem someone beautiful or ugly? who are the poster child’s for these standards, both self-imposed and societally driven?
